It's Supposed To Be About Happiness
Each year the students of John Marshall Alternative School collaborate with 826 Seattle to publish a book of stories and poems. A CD produced by KEXP, featuring music by Blue Scholars, is included with the book.
I met with this particular group of high school students on several occasions to discuss the design of the book. 826 asked me to treat the students as if they were my client, and that their happiness with the design was the most important goal. I looked through their sketches, talked with them, made drawings and brought in multiple comps. I finally settled on the design with skulls and flowers because of a groups of drawings that one of the students had made in his notebook.
